With 85 million members in more than 165 countries, the Anglican Communion represents a wide variety of opinions on mission, theology, and how to live and act as God’s people. Listening Together focuses on the renewal of prayer and the religious life, with stories and reflections from faithful leaders from across the Communion.
“Nothing is more important to our relationship with God than prayer through Jesus Christ,” says Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury. “Renewal of the religious life and renewal of prayer go hand in hand: There will not be one without the other. It is about letting God into every last part of our life.”
Listening Together is the third of a three-book series to help Anglicans around the world discuss shared challenges and opportunities for mission and ministry.
In the new collection, Listening Together: Global Anglican Perspectives on Renewal of Prayer and the Religious Life, we are invited into the prayer life of communities at work around the Anglican Communion. While the Covid-19 pandemic has meant a loss of in-person fellowship, our self-imposed exile has also sparked a deep renewal in the prayer life of many Episcopalians/Anglicans. As we search for a balance in our daily lives, the spiritual discipline of the religious life rhymes both a calming and a challenging beat.
There is much to learn in these stories, as the global reach of the Anglican Communion stretches our view into new horizons. This is no dry bones account of dusty prayers; we are given a glimpse of the active and rhythmic prayer life of real people making a real difference, changing individuals and communities around the world. Listening Together reminds us that God is making the impossible possible through prayer every single day.
A communion based on common prayer, now that would be novel! We under value this treasure of our Communion if it remains but an administrative framework for dialogue. Listening Together takes us back to a more solid foundation of a life based on the rhythm of prayer. Alleluia. –Mark Van Koevering, Bishop, Diocese of Lexington
