I have been reading my November 1998 copy of Forward Day by Day over and over since first picking it up in a hospital chapel after I had just lost a child. Through the years, the meditations have truly fed me. I have been so blessed by these daily devotions that I have passed them along to others through the years. My own ragged copy of my first version sits on my nightstand, and I still use it everyday - more than fifteen years later. I am so grateful for the encouragement over the years. Thank you! - A Reader of Forward Day by Day
Inspiring disciples and empowering evangelists around the globe every day, Forward Movement has been producing excellent, innovative resources to encourage spiritual growth in individuals and congregations for more than eighty years. Growing out of a determination of The Episcopal Church's General Convention in 1934, Forward Movement brought new life to the church after a period of decline. Our "forward movement" was charged to "reinvigorate the life of the church" and since 1935 we have been offering discipleship and evangelism resources to encourage spiritual growth.
Best known for Forward Day by Day, a daily devotion providing meditations on scripture readings, we continue to build on our history of encouraging discipleship and evangelism. Today we offer books and ebooks for small groups, individual study, and prayer, Christian formation courses, leadership events, Spanish and bilingual resources, pamphlets, downloadable resources, a daily podcast, apps for your smartphones or tablets, and online engagement opportunities.
Forward Movement donates over 100,000 resources for Bible study, daily reflection, and spiritual nourishment each year to prisoners, hospital patients, and nursing home residents in fifty countries around the globe. Our ministry is made possible through generous donations and through sales. Click here to donate to our ministry and mission.
The Forward Movement staff gathers each morning to pray for one another, the ministry of Forward Movement, the church, the world, and those who have requested prayer. The following prayer from Prayers New and Old, slightly modified over the years, has been in use for seven decades. We invite our readers and supporters to remember Forward Movement in your prayers:
A Prayer for Forward Movement:
O God, we ask your guidance and blessing for the Forward Movement of your church. Use it, we pray, to open our eyes to your glory and to the opportunities that lie before the church to reach people everywhere with the good news of Christ. Grant that the leaders of Forward Movement may be both wise and daring disciples, and stir up in us the will to share joyfully in this work with our prayers and gifts. Let not our purpose grow slack, that the nations of this world may become one holy people under the kingship of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ. This we ask in His name. Amen.
