Walk the historic tradition of the Stations of the Cross in new ways that will open your soul to grace. This beautiful coffee table book features the paintings of artist Kathrin Burleson as well as soul-searching reflections on her creative process and spiritual journey. Each station also offers devotions from key leaders in The Episcopal Church, including former Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and the Rev. Albert R. Cutié. In images, stories, and prayers, these stations reflect the Passion of Christ, exploring betrayal, judgment, and suffering but ultimately celebrating the great triumph of life over death, the Resurrection of Christ Jesus.
Contributors include: Barry Beisner, Albert R. Cutié, Scott Gunn, former Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, Friar Leo M. Joseph, and Sister Teresa Marie Martin.
The production of this book is exquisite: dust jacket, endpapers, paper quality and so forth. Forward Movement has provided us with a treasure that will not rest on any coffee table. It cries out to be picked up and explored. Let me acknowledge that Kathrin is a fellow Associate of the Community of the Sisters of the Transfiguration (ctsisters.org) and that my congregation, like several in the west, owns one of the many icons she has written (ours is St. Brigid). All these connections, along with being a librarian, made me ultra demanding and even skeptical - before I immersed myself in the book! In it I found layers of reward and inspiration. The depth of coloring is unusual for watercolor painting. The lines, jagged and curved, are just right for the trajectory of each fragment of the Story. The honesty of all the contributors, both Kathrin and those she invited to sit round the table with her, leaves me breathless. Hooray for Sr Teresa saying she shied away from the "painfully realistic" Stations. I go into Lent with a hope of coming out the other side, thanks to having this spiritual toolkit of images and words available.-Susan M. Reeve, Amazon Review
Although I am a Christian, I knew little of the Stations of the Cross prior to reading Kathrin Burleson’s book titled The Soul's Journey. The story preceding and including the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ is a familiar one to all Christians. However, those of us not taught in the Roman Catholic or Episcopalian traditions have likely not contemplated each step that lead to Christ’s crucifixion and the miracle of His resurrection. At least this was true for me. Burleson’s book not only brings focused attention to each step along the way, but she does so with her artistic talent supplemented with teachings both of which brought a new perspective for me to the process that Christ underwent. Further, sharing her own personal experiences as well as inclusion of simple appeals to God in the form of short prayers at the conclusion of the discussion of each Station brought thoughtful examination into the realm of every day life for me. I highly recommend this book for those of us who are unfamiliar with the Stations of the Cross. Having gone through the book twice now, I can honestly write that my celebration of the Risen Lord at Easter this year will be even more joyful than it has been in the past.-Tracy, Amazon Review
Powerful art. Effective liturgy. I used this for a "quiet day" meditation and the participants enjoyed it. Later I projected the art onto a screen and used the liturgy for an experience of Stations of the Cross inside our sanctuary. Again it was well received.-Amazon Customer
